Privacy Policy

Who we are

Our website address is: https://www.wiltshire.net – this is a personally run website, not owned or operated in conjunction with any business.

As this is a personally owned site, I am not required to provide my full contact details to you – however if you wish to make contact with me, you are free to use the Contact Us mechanisms on this website.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

The details which you enter into any contact forms will be sent to the owner of the website (Chris Wiltshire, NZ). This will include the full information which you provide into the form (your name, email address and comments), along with your IP address. Your IP address may be used for GeoIP lookup and location to add context to your contact request. Where you are based may influence my decision as to whether to engage with you or not.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We use PIWIK / Matomo for our site visitor analytics. There is no sensitive personal information recorded within this system. General identifiable information such as your IP address is recorded and it uses a session cookie, as well as a persistent cookie to link multiple visits to my site together in it’s reporting. This information is used by me to determine which of the content that I am providing is most popular, most useful and most regularly visited. This data is periodically anonymised, and is not retained beyond 3 years.

Who we share your data with

None of the data captured through various systems is shared with any external party, only the site owner is able to view PIWIK / Matomo statistical reports, and ‘back-end’ log information. Data posted to the site in the way of comments, after approval is public and will be shared with any subsequent visitor to that comment section. Various automated systems such as anti-spam protections which use centralised databases of known spam sites may be referenced when you attempt to comment on posts.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see, edit and at their will, delete that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Email notifications / communication are created from the website to the site owner via various comment and contact functions, your information entered into contact and comment forms will transit these services during delivery to the site owner. None of these details are stored within those intermediary email service providers.

Your contact information

As this is a personal website, I am not obliged to provide my full contact details publicly. You may use my Contact Us function to make contact if required.

Additional information

How we protect your data

We collect no highly sensitive, personally identifiable information. Only IP address details, and if you provide them directly to us your name, email and some comment content. This does not, if our view constitute sensitive information. You provide these details to us at your own will, and voluntarily. We make reasonable efforts to protect your personal data by adopting only quality based tools within our website, keeping our site patched and up to date etc. If you are concerned about the safety of your data as it is stored on our site, then please request immediate removal of your personal details and we will ensure that they do not reside within our databases beyond your initial contact with us.

What data breach procedures we have in place

I will happily receive communication relating to a concern or a complaint, I will investigate this to the best of my personal ability and attempt to resolve any issues you might have. I am under no obligation to do this since this is a personally owned and hosted website.

What third parties we receive data from

GeoIP location based services which translate an IP address to an estimated physical location, allow us to know to the degree of ‘city’, where our visitors likely come from; these databases are approximations based on groups of aggregated data, and do not directly relate to your specific, individual connection or IP. This is not linked externally with their data, their data is updated periodically and resides on our system, the linkage is done in-house. Once linked, this information is not shared with anyone.

Similarly, there are lookup services from which your Internet Service Provider can be determined; this can often provide useful and interesting insight into our visitors.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

None.
